Effect of Differences in Hyperopia Reserve Reference Values on Myopia Risk Prediction

Abstract: Hyperopia reserve is closely associated with age and the physiological developmental stage of the eye, serving as a simple and effective indicator for predicting the onset of myopia. However, significant discrepancies currently exist among different systems of reference values. Overly stringent criteria may reduce the specificity in identifying short-term myopia risk, resulting in many children on a normal developmental trajectory being incorrectly classified as having insufficient hyperopia reserve. This may not only trigger parental anticipatory anxiety but also lead to inappropriate behaviors, such as excessive intervention or passive avoidance, thereby causing unnecessary adverse effects. Therefore, the focus of myopia prevention and control should be shifted from pursuing more stringent reference values to slowing the excessive and rapid depletion of hyperopia reserve. For children already identified as having insufficient hyperopia reserve, parents should be guided to adopt a scientific management approach based on monitoring, intervention, and reevaluation to alleviate anxiety and enhance rationality in preventive actions. This article aims to review differences in existing reference values, analyze their impact on clinical practice and public health information and education, and provide corresponding optimization recommendations.
